Thursday Thirteen #32 All About Snow

Now that we have our first real snowfall that isn't going away I thought I'd write a post all about snow and what I like and dislike about it.

1. The best snow to make snowmen out of is slightly wet snow so you need a mild day to do it otherwise the snow is dry and it will not form a ball. On a really cold day the snow crunches under your boots. My sis misses this type of snow as she gets wet snow and it's not the same.

2. Snow can cause all sorts of mishaps from vehicle mishaps to power outages.

3. During a blizzard there is snow and windy conditions that can make the visibility drastically reduced. During a blizzard people will go home early from work, kids can get dismissed early - but in all my years there has never been school shut down for a blizzard - this typically happens in small towns where children rely on a school bus to take them to school.

4. My favorite 'snow memory' is of making a fort in my back yard. There was a ton of snow that year and the fort was just perfect, we even made benches to sit on and we sat and played in the fort.

5. Shoveling sucks! I didn't realize how much so until we bought our house. We have a huge drive way and a huge cement pad. I usually love snowfalls but last year I was so tired of it that I cringed when I saw the forecast. This year we caved in and bought a snowblower.....bring on the snow now Mother Nature!

6. Winter activities that you need snow for are outdoor ice skating, snow angels, snow ball fights, tobogganing, building a snowman, making a snow fort, skiing, snowboarding and of course snow mobiling. If you dress appropriately these activities are a lot of fun!

7. Hot Cocoa is the perfect drink after playing in the snow - try this recipe.
Or share one of your own with us.

8. In our province we've only had one month where there was no snow - can you guess which one it is?

9. Don't eat yellow snow!

10. The prettiest snowfall is the big fluffy flakes that fall straight down! It usually happens when it's not too cold outside and it's absolutely breathtaking.

11. After a few good snowfalls all the local stores will sell out of shovels and people have been known to steal shovels from peoples yards. Kids will come door to door, shovel in hand trying to make a few dollars by shoveling your walkway.

12. Snowy nights provide the perfect excuse to stay inside and snuggle up with a loved one while sipping a nice hot drink - very romantic!

13. As I sit writing about snow I'm reminded exactly how long I'll be staring at it. We got our first snowfall at the end of November and it will probably be here until the end of March. By that time I'll be tired of it and it will not be as pretty as it is now(all perfectly white) - it will be all brown and mixed with road salt and sand.

When the Postman rings twice...

The other day I was at work and enjoying a nice cup of soup in our lunch room when I heard the doorbell. Of course I am on my lunch hour and I don't want to be bothered by questions some kind parishioner may have. I just continued to eat my lunch and enjoy a bit o' knitting as I sipped a nice cup of hot tea.

After all the sign out front clearly states our office hours - so why ring the bell?

Once I was done my lunch I resumed my work for the afternoon, about ten minutes into my afternoon the doorbell rang once again. There was the scariest postman I have ever seen. He looked like he hadn't seen a razor, or a shower in over a week. He glared at me with scary black eyes and slammed my parcel down on the spare office desk! He didn't say a word, just glared at me with his beady little eyes. If looks could kill...well you get my drift.

I felt like I had been transported into a Stephen King horror flick! If I get impaled by a letter opener you'll know who the culprit is - (scary ass postman - with the beady black eyes).

Riders win Grey Cup 2007!

Fans took to the streets, there were parades of people and cars up and down the downtown and main streets - horns honking, people running along side cars giving high fives - a few crazy kids streaking. This was an exciting win for us Rider fans - it has taken us 18 years to win again and the city went crazy with excitement. This video was taken on Albert Street and I will share how crazy it was with you.

I was glad to take part in some of the crazy good fun. I was the driver and DH, DD and DS had their windows rolled down and screaming and waving at all the people as I honked my horn and waved at everyone. It was our own prairie victory parade.

The Grey Cup is coming home!

The other video is how crazy they got in Saskatoon!

Twas The Night Before Grey Cup

Twas the night before Grey Cup, and all through the Dome,
Not a creature was stirring, but the gophers back home.
The players were nestled and snug in their beds,
While visions of Grey Cup Rings danced in their heads.

When out on the field, there arose such a clatter,
Kent sprang from his bed to see what was the matter,
Away to his window, he flew like a flash,
Threw aside the Green Curtains, and Silky White Sash.

And what did he see with his wondering eye?
But a sea of Green Revelers and a furry brown guy.
“That looks like Dominguez, and Flick and Fantuz!”
“Its way after curfew! Do they want us to lose??”

So, out of his room and down to the field,
Coach Austin stormed out with a fury to wield.
As he went through the tunnel, the ground shook with a beat,
From the dancing and prancing of ten thousand feet.

“Hey Coach,” cried a voice, “Whatcha doing down here?”
It was Szarka and Schultz, and they were handing out beer!
Chucky and Chick were grilling up Dogs,
With Burgers being served by O’Day and the Hogs.

Crandall cooked Hot Wings, Joseph grilled steak,
While Cates, Holmes, and Hughes helped Makowsky serve cake.
“This is nuts!” Austin shouted, “It’s one-thirty AM!”
“I expected some revelry, but this is mayhem!”

Eric Tillman tapped Austin, “ You’re not Eagle Keys -”
“But I’m not Berry, or Gotta, or Gregory * so PLEASE!”
“You’re all waddling around here like Wascana geese!”
“And in need of a dance coach like Donald Narcisse.”

“Now, you’ve all had your fun, so back to your rooms.”
But then Austin’s nose picked up the barbecue fumes.
Then Green Is The Color rang out through the air,
As Congi and Boreham played Banjos with flair.

On Davis, on Johnson, on Coach Ritchie Hall,
Even old Alex Smith flashed a smile after all,
On Lloyd, on McCullough, on Hunt and on Perry,
On Kornegay, Frazier, and yes, even Kerry.

The skydome then filled with a soft greenish glow,
And the whole Rider Nation set poised for a show.
An S and a wheat sheaf then formed in the air,
And a smile took the place of Coach Kent Austin’s glare.

Then everyone there, the players, the fans,
They formed a big circle by all holding hands,
Then right in the centre appeared the Grey Cup,
Which Fairholm and Ridway and Elgaard picked up.

They handed it over to Ritchie and Kent,
Who called Kerry and Eddie, and off the Cup went.
It was passed round the field, past heroes to present,
While Gainer dug holes for the Blue Bomber Pheasants.

That music was heard coast to coast people say
And they say Rider Pride grew three sizes that day.
Everyone left there dreaming of Blue Bomber doom.
And they sent all the Banjos to Troy Westwood’s Room.

GO RIDERS GO!
BRING HOME THE CUP!

Dedicated to the Fine Folks in the Rider Nation!

Christmas a different gift giving option...

My DH just wrote a post about the new child we adopted through CCCI that is Christian Child Care International - he has written quite extensively but I thought I'd give it a boost too as I'm very happy with their accountability and cost saving measures and their dedication to helping all children have an education and a good quality of life.

After reading the post he wrote I found out there are more ways we can help other than making a monthly commitment to sponsor a child. I like that I can go there and buy mosquito nets for people in need, a stove for a family or even sheep and chickens. Even more exciting is that you can buy this in someone else's name as a gift. Do you have a hard to buy for person, someone who has everything. If you buy a gift on behalf of someone else they will get a card that tells them exactly what was bought and the difference it will make to the person/community.

So you could make a difference this Christmas! Not only would you be helping people in need not with just another 'charitable' gift but actually giving people what they need to get a leg up in the world. Imagine what a pair of breeding rabbits would do for a community or a dental and doctor visit for a child. These are just a few of the things you can buy from their catalog. You can do all that and even get a tax receipt for your generosity.

This is just another way we can give thanks for our blessings and share our abundances with others.

Swap Package arrives in gorgeous California!

My swap partner Cassie received her package and she loved everything! I am so happy she liked it, I decided to be risky and buy a few more big items so she has some things she was wishing for and a few surprises. Thanks for being such a great swap partner, I have enjoyed our emails.

Random Thoughts on Wednesday...

-I found this link to Christmas Tour of Homes at A Spot of T and you just know that I am going to have to participate, Christmas is my all time favorite season - and it isn't just because I was born in December!

-It's snowing out today and it's such a beautiful gentle snowfall and I just want to snuggle with a big mug of tea and a good book or some knitting. It truly feels like Christmas is coming, I want to listen to carols and put up the tree.

-Replacing honey for sugar in tea is quite a treat and such a smooth taste.

-I've wasted more time at work making gift boxes today, why are they so addicting to make?

-Busyness, oy! I've been so busy working on Christmas gifts I rarely have time to blog.

-Did I mention that year end is a busy time too - I've just prepared the envelopes for next year! The next thing will be finalizing year end and preparing tax receipts.

-Our home team is in the Grey Cup Finale - Go Riders Go! This is their first time competing against a rival prairie team and we're confident they'll be successful!

-Time to plan a Grey Cup party - get the menu planned and buy some beer, Rickard's Red here I come.

-It bugs me when other people use my tea mug at work!

-I get really annoyed when people leave rude comments - honestly if you don't have anything nice to say then you should just shuddupa your face!

Like I said just a bunch of randomness.

Recyled Crafts - Uses for old Christmas cards...

A lady at church once showed me how to turn an old Christmas card into a lovely gift box - they are so simple to make and they make perfect gift boxes for those little treasures. I was surprised that I remembered how to do it this morning and also that you can find instructions online.

It's a matter of using a ruler and doing some simple folding and cutting and in seconds you have a handy gift box that you can decorate or leave as is. I was going to put directions here but I've found them online already and they are very good instructions. If you have any questions feel free to email me at mrs_tea_mouse at hotmail dot com.

I made this one here this morning at work - in 3 minutes.

If the cards have writing on them you can use the front for gift tags or Christmas tree decorations by simply getting creative with fancy scissors ribbon and other decorations.

What do you do with your old Christmas cards?

Weekend Tasks Accomplished

I made my butter tarts(they turned out delicious), colored my hair and managed to do all of that with an excited dog following me around! If the kids want more baking they'll have to figure out that mom needs help with watching the dog....lol!

We had snow and then it promptly melted the next day. It was a beautiful day yesterday so when DH got home we took Oliver for a walk to the pet store and got him some new chews and looked at Christmas gift ideas for him. I think he's going to get one of those engraved dog tags and they had some great rawhide chews in candy cane shapes that looked interesting. I already bought Ginger a cat nip filled denim toy that she'll go nuts over! Last year they got big things so this year he'll get a bunch of chews and she'll be happy with cat nip as she won't eat any cat treats or even people food. I can't even treat her with wet cat food as she refuses to eat it...isn't that the oddest thing ever!

I didn't get much knitting done on the weekend as I was pretty much the one watching Oliver, although we did get out for a walk both days...which of course I do need. I have to find a way to get exercise back...the routine I've been doing just doesn't fit with our schedule and if we miss too many days we're not ready for the changes that are made regularly. I think I see more of the elliptical being used and doing some free weight training on our own.

Tonight I have to get re-focused and start getting my dishcloth projects and DS's afghan completed as I think we're at 36 days until Christmas....Yikes!

We have Snow!!!

Yes, we have some snow now. We got a small amount of snow in the last few days and it hasn't completely melted and it looks like we have more coming tonight and tomorrow! We have been really lucky so far, some years we have it before Halloween.

It looks like Life in Westcliffe has won the pity dishcloth, you can contact me at mrs_tea_mouse at hotmail dot com with your mailing address and I'll get a cloth in the mail to you today!

I had a great relaxing evening last night - after coming home to a mess my DS had made after he was angry about his chore list....(he slammed the fridge door, not realizing a jar of candied cherries I had in there had a loose lid.....let me just say one word STICKY)...so after that I was ready to relax indeed. Me and Oliver snuggled up on the couch as I watched the recorded episodes of All my Children that I've missed for the last 5 days and I worked on 'believe it or not' the DS's afghan...I'm almost at the half way point....yay!

So far the plans for the weekend should keep me pretty busy - we I am dog sitting for my MIL while she goes to a birthday party. So I'll have to wrangle entertain two dogs for a few hours as DH has a weekend obligation that will keep him from home.

I plan on getting my butter tarts made..........mmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmm!

I hope to get a hair color in my hair - hopefully it's not as itchy this time. My hairdresser told me a little trick to help with it that I'm going to try(you add a packet of sweet and low artificial sweetener to the dye), apparently this works on even the most sensitive of scalps, so we'll see.

Then if there is any time left - I will of course be knitting and crocheting.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday Thirteen #30 ~ Knitting in bed and more signs you know you're addicted

Thirteen Signs that you know you are addicted to knitting(I posted this last December, but I am once again addicted to knitting so I thought it would be a good post to resurrect)!

1. You wake up in the morning, and before you have tea or coffee...you are knitting!

2.You go near the yarn aisle and Hubby starts to twitch....I swear its happened!

3. You consider buying a new house - as your's doesn't have the space needed to store your treasured yarn and accessories. Every closet and drawer you open up has yarn spilling out of it.

4. You ask for yarn and knitting books for Christmas - omitting diamonds and perfume.

5. Pass on the chips and dip - I gotta knit! No time for snacking with my sticks a flying.

8. You always have more than one project on the go, and generally three or more.

9. You take your knitting everywhere, city bus, PTA meeting and the staff Christmas party, and you've been banned from the movie theatre after that last incident*blush*.

10. You buy a King Size bed just for the elbow room, poor hubby and all those needle size bruises.

11. Summer vacations are planned around your ability to be able to knit - no white water rafting for this knitter - give me a cabin in the woods with a nice rocker any day!

12. The owner of your local yarn shoppe gives you a personal phone call when the newest yarns arrive.

13. You're on a first name basis with the FedEx man, who brings you your weekly yarn purchases that you made online.

If you've admited to even three of these, you are probably like me, a confirmed Knit-A-Holic! I knit pretty much every opportunity I get. I generally knit in the car on the way to work -
It's ok hubby is doing the driving, you didn't actually think I knit and drove at the same time did you?......Hmmmmmmm that would indeed be a talent that I coud get used to. I think I listen to rather than watch most TV shows. For me knitting is the perfect past time. I can do it pretty much anywhere and at the end I have something to show for it.

I'm very happy to say that I finished my MIL's shawl lasat night. I'm now working on my Mom's scarf and dishcloths that are being given as Christmas gifts!

Happy Knitting!

What I've been up to...

I just discovered how delicious honey is in tea! I received a box of Snapple's (Honey of an Apple) tea from my swap partner Cassie. I brewed it up and used some honey to sweeten it and it was just delicious. I've now used it in my regular tea and my Typhoo as well and I think it is much smoother.

I'm almost done my shawl for my MIL - I have about 8 inches left to go and then I can bind that baby off. It's going to be hard to part with for sure. I ended up going to my local yarn store to purchase some Addi Turbos in 4.5 mm after using the ones that Cassie sent me I just knew I had to finish that shawl with circular needles and boy am I ever glad I did! They work wonderfully. Now I have to get cracking on my DS's afghan and more dishcloths as well as a scarf for my mom....phew.....almost there!

We went to a great craft sale on the weekend and I picked up the present for our boss - all of the office staff chip in. I found this wonderful flaming rock candle(this gives an idea what they look like ~ this isn't the company I bought mine from) and he always has candles burning so I thought it was quite a unique gift.

I got my Christmas baking started and I'm so happy! I really want to get most of my stuff done by the end of November. I really want to be able to enjoy Advent without feeling stressed out. I had to run to the store yesterday and the stores are already crazy - thankfully I'm just about done my shopping as well. I will have that all done by the end of them month too ~ if not I'll lose my mind come December, I can't stand huge crowds and getting overheated while I decide on this tie or that shirt.....lol!

I finished the pity cloth for my contest and soon I'll announce the winner, so far it looks like Life in Westcliffe is in the lead - I will wait until Friday and then announce the winner. If you haven't voted yet, go here to vote for who you think is most deserving of the cloth.

I'm also mailing out the first cloth to Dawn - she'll be receiving one cloth a month for a year - that's 12 cloths in total! I'm so excited to start mailing them to her and I know she is excited to receive them.

Christmas music is all synchronized with my mp3 player and I have my playlist all compiled. I can now pop my player and plug it into the auxilary outlet in the car and have Boney M or Harry Connic Jr. singing me a Christmas tune.

Oh did I forget to mention, I am nutty for Christmas!!!!!!!

At Home Baking

Today is my in lieu holiday of Remembrance Day so I'm going to start on my Christmas baking. I'm making Whipped Shortbread and Magic Santa Cookie Bars(recipe below). I figured I'd get a head start on my baking this year and hopefully prevent the Christmas blues that I come down with when I feel like I'm rushed and running out of time.

Magic Santa Cookie Bars:

1 can (3oo ml) Sweetened Condensed Milk regular or low fat
2 cups graham wafer crumbs
3/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cups white or semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup mini marshmallows

1. Comgine graham wafer crumbs with butter, press evenly into a parchment lined 13 x 9 baking pan.

2. Pour 2/3 Condensed milk over crumbs.

3. Sprinkle with pecans, chips, cranberries, coconut and marshmallows; press down firmly. Pour remaining condensed milk over top.

4. Bake in a preheated 350F oven for 25 - 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool thoroughly and cut into bars. (store loosely at room temperature.) Makes 24 bars.

If you have a favorite (must-have) cookie recipe that the family absolutely must have each year and you'd like to share it, please leave a comment or post about it and let me know.

Have a great day!

Anne's November Contest...

Anne is hosting a contest and I'm going to enter it after finding out about it on Lovin Comfort Knits. Please stop by and visit and let Anne know I sent you over.

Anne is asking for us to share three of our favorite patterns. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. They are all easy and knit up very quickly.

My first is Irish Hiking Scarf - it is so beautiful when it's done and I love doing the cables! I made this one for myself last winter.

I discovered a pattern I had printed off of the internet and I just love it. I'm making my first one now - see isn't it pretty! You can find the pattern here.

I've also knit up these ponchos for my nieces - they are so easy and they knit up quickly!

Thursday Thirteen #29 - What I loved about my Crazy DishCloth Give-A-Way!

Here are 13 things I've loved about my Dish Cloth for a year Give-A-Way!

1. JennyMcB started the ball rolling with a hilarious post. She was going to try to pull an Ocean's 11 kind of master plan. Unfortunately Georgie and the boys backed out due to the weather in Canada getting too cold. I think DH was getting ready to put bars on the windows.

2. JaneyWan from Life in Westcliffe got creative with her post and showed the internet her ratty dishrags. That spiraled and a few more were brave enough to show me their dish rags, I had a lot of good laughs at seeing those pictures pop up in hopes of winning new cloths for a year.

3. I ordered some lovely yarn from Peaches and Cream - this was my first ever online order and I am glad it took this contest to get me to try their product. It makes lovely cloths.

4. I've found new patterns such as a Homer Simpson and a Tweety Bird dishcloth(although they call it yellow bird so they don't get their butts sued...lol).

5. I now always have a small project to take with me when I travel to and from work. DH can drive and I'll just knit, knit and knit some more.

6. I loved reading about my contest in the News!

7. I decided to try the Ball Band dishcloth that everyone is making and I love it.

8. DH thinks I look sexy when I knit....lol!

9. I can't eat chips while knitting - so less snacking.

10. Knitting is cheaper than therapy so I'm saving money....j/k lol!

11. Oliver loves having his mom cozying up with him on the couch every night.

12. I just loved reading all of entries....Grace's poem was perfect it could have been my contest slogan!

13. From the entries to the comments to thinking of the contest it has all been so much fun. I looked forward each day to seeing if there were new entries or what zany things people would say in their comments. I ended up cheering you all on and the only sad part was not being able to give you all dishcloths for a year - it's true! Thank you all for the good laughs that we've shared over this wacky contest idea of mine it has been the most fun I've ever had through a contest and I know I'll have to do it again! Although the winner has been chosen there is still a chance for some of the entries to get a bonus dishcloth - check out this post to vote for who you think deserves the dishcloth the most...Caution ugly dishrags ahead!

My Pink Lemonade Washcloth

With some of that lovely Peaches and Cream yarn I got in my swap package I have knit myself a facecloth and crocheted a ruffled edging on it. Isn't it pretty? I even used my Addi Turbos to knit the cloth - I think I can get used to circulars - these ones don't snag the yarn at all as it transfers from the cable holder to the needles.

Dawn from Colours of Dawn won the DishCloth For A Year Give-A-Way! Now you can vote on who is most deserving of a dishcloth go here to vote now! The person with the most votes will get a knitted dishcloth sent to them.

Blogging Break is officially over!

Well I sure did need a break but I am refreshed and rejuvenated and jumping up and down excited to be back - did ya miss me?

Life got really hectic last week - we entered into negotiations to buy a new car and you know what that is like...lol! We ended up trading in our 2002 Saturn SL1 for a 2007 Saturn Ion - isn't it pretty! I snagged this pic from the net as I haven't had time to take pics of ours - but this is what it looks like the color is 'Storm', so look out here I come! It`s been interesting to get used to as we previously drove a standard and we`re now in an automatic. I think our DS enjoys it a lot, less to do while driving....lol!
I`ve been knitting a lot of dishcloths lately and I`ve been really slacking on my other knitting. My MIL`s shawl is sitting all alone in my bedroom feeling neglected as is a scarf I started for my Mom and an afghan that is seriously pouting in my closet and its really hoping to be done before Christmas...yikes! What`s up with that? I think it is partly to do with the fact that I have all the new Peaches and Cream yarn and I just love the fact that the cloths are done lickety split - I`ll have to get seriously motivated to get my Christmas knitting done. Oh, well to be fair some of the dish cloths are for Christmas.....so technically I am still working on that goal..:P!

The Contest ends tonight at midnight so I`ll be up all night tallying up the winners scores. I was so impressed with the creativeness and the regular reminders that people snuck into their daily blogs. I was initially going to give a second and third prize away and I`ve decided that I have too much on my plate, but I think we should give a bonus prize to the person with the saddest dishcloths. I`ll allow you to vote tomorrow for this bonus prize! Check back to vote and to see who the winner of this craaaaaaazy contest will be.
