On the Needles and Going on the needles

This is the Comfort shawl - I changed my mind and I'm adding colour changes - as you can tell I'm daydreaming of spring days! I'm knittting along with my sis as she is also doing this same shawl....maybe she'll let me post pics of hers.

The second photo is of a shawl called Wool Peddler's Shawl and I want to start this one next. Isn't the lace bottom just gorgeous! I just picked out some nice colours of Mirasol Hacho, pure merino wool for it, so I'm excited. I wasn't sure at first if I could to this shawl, but working on the Comfort Shawl has given me the confidence to take this project on. Mine will also be done up in 5 different variegated's - it will be quite beautiful.

Wordless Wednesday - well one word anyway and that is - COLD!

Ok so now I'm REALLY COLD!!!!

Yesterday our city was hit with a blizzard - we shut our office down early and went home. (the picture on the left gives an idea of what our visibility was like) Even though the drive home was a little scary - at times we could only see 50 ft in front of our car, I was glad to be getting home. That was until I saw the lovely horrendous pile of snow that had drifted into my driveway. Yes, we do have a snowblower, but at the time the temperature was about -44 with the windchill and my DH has a cough deep in his chest and as he is prone to getting pneumonia, I offered insisted that I be the one to clear the snow. I was using my driving gloves and almost froze my fingers off, thankfully his ski gloves fit over my gloves. After that I wasn't too cold, but I couldn't see hardly at all with the blowing snow and my glasses kept fogging up. I ended up taking off my glasses and doing the best I could. I did get it all cleared and thankfully it didn't all blow back in overnight.

When I went to put our snowblower back in the garage the garage door opener wasn't working. I had to call DH out to look at it - he thought it was just dead and I convinced him that it was just too cold. He turned on the heat in the garage and in an hour or so the opener was working again. We've had to pre-warm the garage to be able to get the car out when we need it....this has never happened since we've moved there 2 years ago.

I pre-warmed my bed, thank goodness for heated mattress pads!! It was sure nice to snuggle into a toasty warm bed! I'm glad I had a nice warm sleep, because we woke up to even COLDER temperatures. It's currently -34 without windchill, but factoring the wind that is gusting at times up to 60km/hr, it feels more like -52!!!!! Folks, I don't know if you realize just how cold that is, but that is darn cold. Skin can freeze in 2 - t5 minutes if it's exposed to the elements. Looking at a chart on dangerous windchills if the windchill was -55 their recommendations for keeping safe are simply 'stay indoors'.

Unfortunately it isn't a snow day and I am at work, we'll probably have to start the car periodically throughout the day to keep it warm, thank goodness for Command Start!

I'm going to run and put on a pot of tea to keep warm - so if you thought your weather was cold today you now know it could be a LOT!

What I'm Knitting

I am working on this pattern that my sister put me on to. It's quite beautiful when it's knitted up. It's called Comfort Shawl 2 and although I had to frog my first one I am much happier as I've decided to do it all in Sage green rather than alternating colours.

If you try the pattern let me know, I'd love to see pictures of it being done in different colour combinations.

What to to when it's 40 Below Zero!!!

It's COLD I mean really cold - so cold that when you go outside and take a breath you feel like your lungs are going to freeze cold. Days like today are really only good for staying indoors and watching t.v. and finding some humor to survive the Cabin Fever.

I got a cute poem emailed to me today about Saskatchewan winters that I'll share and another Snow poem that I've seen often over the years....I'll mellow it down a bit as it's language can be a bit much....but it's funny nonetheless. Today I'm dreaming of white sandy beaches and clear blue water, sipping a Margarita soaking in the rays!

It's winter in
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below

Oh, how I love
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut

Yes, the weather here is wonderful

So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground!!

Diary of a Snow Shoveler

Author unknown

December 8: 6:00 PM.
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9:
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12:
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14:
Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15:
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16:
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17:
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20:
Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Damnsnowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22:
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white s**t fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying.

December 23:
Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0o. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24:
6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a b***h who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas Carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25:
Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the !=3D@x@!x!x1 slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to kill her.

December 26:
Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27:
Temperature dropped to -30o and the pipes froze.

December 28:
Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. That woman is driving me crazy!!!!!

December 29:
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30:
Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.

December 31:
Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8:
I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

Thursday Thirteen #36 - Random Thoughts

-How's this for random - I'm not even centering my header and I'm doing a whole different format. You have no idea how bad I am fighting the urge to center it right now, yes I'm that much of a 'J'!

-I am picking up new projects all the time. I resumed working on my Einstein sweater for myself, began and finished 2 dishcloths and started a third after seeing the DW on Lovin Comfort Knits Blog and I'm working on a set of placemats for my kitchen. But in my head I'm planning even more and more projects. Really though, is there ever too many projects? Half of the fun is planning what you'll do next.

-I bought myself some great Pilot pens in some nice colours - turquoise, pink and violet. I have a thing stationery. One of my favorite things to do is browse the stationery stores and order supplies for work. It's even more fun when I'm not paying for it...:)!

-I'm in the process of letting my hair grow out to it's natural colour - and yes I'm a little lot grey. I've had a lot of problems with sensitive scalp and honestly I'm just tired of paying the cost to keep it all up. My DH loves me no matter what colour my hair is and in fact he's been trying to convince me to stop for years...and no he doesn't pay for the colours..he's just a sweetheart.

-On my last Wordless Wednesday post people had asked me how I did the pencil drawing photo. I modified it using Paint Shop Pro - Pencil did turn out pretty cool.

-I'm craving East Indian Food, I get to smell it cooking a LOT! I never used to be this adventurous and when I met DH so many years ago I only ate mild cheddar, mozeralla and marble cheese(boring hey)!

-For the last 5 nights I've been waking up with a start. I don't know what's startling me. I did think it was my cat 'Ginger' she comes in and out of my room all night long. I've tried closing her out but she paws at the door and it drives me nuts - yes she's in charge and she knows it too!

-We walked Oliver at the park on Sat and Sun - on Sat he was great and didn't bark too much but on Sunday...oyeeeeee he barked and had a fit at everyone. I think he's been in the house too much. It was so embarassing but I think keeping him away from people will only make this problem worse.

-I got some paints for Christmas and different art supplies. So far they're hiding in my room. I'm kind of nervous to start fiddling with them. I did mention I was thinking of taking a class at some point, but to just jump in....I'm not sure.

-Do you think a man or a woman came up with the new Always saying of 'Have a Happy Period'! Surely a woman would know that is nearly next to impossible and is the last thing she wants to see or hear when it's happening.....would someone please pass the chocolate!

-Why does time only seem to speed up when you don't want it to and slow down to a halt on a Friday afternoon as you wait for 5:00 p.m. to arrive - It's so annoying that the weekends go by so fast.

-I'll be married 20 years in 2009 so we're planning our first ever vacation...we never did the honeymoon thing. As we plan for it we're trying to decide where to go. I think it would be nice to start with a tropical trip but the hills of Tuscany also call to me. I guess we'll see what we have to spend when the time comes.

-My youngest sister is moving away this Saturday and now I will officially be the only one left here except for my Great Granny! I'm kinda bummed about it - I wish I could live nearer to my family. I would have so much fun knitting and yarn shopping with my Knitster (sis)! One day I'd like to spend a Christmas with her family - not a Scrooge to be day maybe.

My Weekend of Knitting

We rented the Pirates of the Carribean #2 and 3 - I had only seen the first so far and we had a gift card to use. They were a lot of fun to watch - it's always fun to watch Johnny Depp. However we tried watching Cry Baby as we had it taped on our DVR and 20 min. into it we both decided to delete it and watch something else.
So while I watched movies I got some knitting done.
I found a pattern for knitting up placemats on the label of Bernat - it's so super easy. It's basically a seed stitch, you cast on 47 stitches and work K1 and then *P1, K1* across. Working the pattern continuously until the placemat measures 17". The finished placemat is 11 x 17. I am doing them in a pale yellow as I my kitchen colours are green and yellow. I'll take another picture of it once it's complete.

I also did up a BallBand cloth using the some self striping cotton. I love the effect of using the striping yarn for this cloth.

This one is a waffle cloth - I found it free at Bernat
It creates an almost honeycomb texture and it's so easy.
The only thing I did different was cast on 37 instead of 47 as I got a huge cloth when I tried the 47 sts.

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!
Here's to a wonderful 2008

Do you all make those dreaded 'New Year's Resolutions'?

Well I've made a few and one of them affects this blog.
The first thing I plan on doing is going through my recipes and patterns that I've gathered
from the nether regions and compiling them into a proper storage/filing system.
I get so frustrated when I look for a recipe or a pattern and I can't remember where I put it.
I received a wonderful CookBook from my Sis for my birthday - she compiled a book of her favorite recipes and she handwrote them into a lovely book and included cute anecdotes and her own artwork....truly wonderful! I'd like to be able to do the same and I am going to have to organize my stuff so I can do it!
So how does my resolutions this year affect the blog - well I will no longer blog at work unless all my current jobs are done(and I will not do it more than once a week at work)...this means I will probably be blogging less, hopefully 2 - 3 times/week. I am trying to decide if the Thursday Thirteen will or will not be included. For me Thursday's are hectic and putting a TT together has been very stressful.

How was your Christmas?
I received some lovely gifts and had some great family times.
My daughter bought me a soap gift set made with Ostrich milk and it's inside an ostrich oil(I know I must get a pic of that online). I have to say it was the most unique gift I've ever received.
My kids both loved their afghans! They are always snuggling up with them while they watch t.v. and my Mom and Granny loved their slippers and I finally got a chance to make myself a pair. Right now I'm taking time to knit for 'me' and this includes a sweater and some more slippers.
We had a lovely dinner with my in-law's, unforunately due to illness I was feeling really rundown by Christmas day, but we had a good meal and we sat around playing a new card game they got for Christmas.
We had them over for New Year's dinner and soon we'll have a night of just playing games(it's so much fun).
DH and I bought the family a Power Yahtzee game and we've been enjoying playing it in the evening instead of watching t.v.(what's with this writer strike anyways).
